2026 Sub-Arctic Tundra Caribou Experience

Set out on a day trip into the sub-arctic tundra, a unique barren-ground landscape known for it’s wide-open spaces, ancient geology and one of nature’s most iconic migrations: the caribou. During this adventure, you’ll discover a region that comes alive in the autumn months.

To begin, the journey starts with a floatplane excursion traveling about 60 miles from the North Seal River Lodge.
From the air, you can observe as the terrain shifts from boreal forest to tundra. Rolling hills, eskers, permafrost flats and low shrubs blaze with vibrant fall colors. Deep reds, golds and fiery oranges stand out against the muted greens of mosses and lichen clinging to the ancient soil.

Once you land, embark on a short, scenic hike that leads you to the 60th parallel, where a plaque marks the border of Nunavut and Manitoba. Here, you’ll find a fantastic vantage point to spot Central Barrenground Caribou. In addition, the surrounding tundra offers sweeping views and a sense of timeless wilderness.
The Qamairjuag Caribou herd is part of a migratory population that has roamed this land for thousands of years. Each year, they journey through the tundra from late August through mid-September.

In addition to Caribou, the tundra is also home to arctic wolves, ptarmigan and wolverines. Guests frequently witness them roaming the area. With a keen eye, you may even spot an elusive Barrenlands Grizzly!
